MIT、組み立て家具を設計から部材カットまでワンストッ
マサチューセッツ工科大学(MIT)は28日(現地時間)、CAD/CAMなどのソフトウェア技術とすでに存在するロボット技術を組み合わせ、オーダーメイド家具を製造する研究を発表した。このような製造設備が普及すれば、IKEAのような大量生産が主流の家具市場でマス・カスタマイゼーションを実現する可能性がある。 専用の大型製造設備を用いるものと異なり、天板などのカットには改造したルンバが用いられているのも特徴的だ。このルンバにはジグソーが搭載されており、モーショントラッキング技術で制御され、汎用性を保ちながらCADで設計した図面通りに部材を切り抜くことを可能としている。
角材などの細長い部材のカットには市販の丸ノコが用いられており、ロボットはまるで人間が丸ノコを使用するような動作を実行することができるとのことだ。
同研究の特筆すべきは点は、既存のロボット技術を用いながらも、CADソフトと連携して汎用的に部材をカットできる点にあるだろう。
また、強度や組み立て順序のシミュレーションも可能で、デザインの実現可能性を判断できる点も優れている。AR(拡張現実)技術と組み合わせてスマートフォンから実際の間取りにあわせて家具を設計し、特別な木工の知識なしに理想の家具を注文するといったことも可能になるかもしれない。
現状、多くの家具量販店では、さまざまな需要を満たすためカラーやサイズ違いで多品種を在庫でそろえるが、オンデマンド製造とすることでそうした在庫や流通コストの削減につながる可能性があり、経済的な観点からも注目される技術だろう。
